Auburn defended Amari Cooper like ‘any other person,’ which he is not

It didn’t work.

How good was Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper against Auburn Saturday? He set an Iron Bowl record for receiving yardage in just three quarters, eventually finishing with 13 catches for 224 yards and three touchdowns. He so dominated the Auburn defensive backs that offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin started celebrating a Cooper touchdown before the ball was even thrown. No matter the coverage and no matter where Cooper lined up, he repeatedly burned the Tigers’ secondary for long gains.

What was Auburn’s plan for covering the best receiver in the country? Nothing special, apparently.

“He’s a top receiver, we’ve got top receivers,” Auburn safety Johnathan Ford said. “We just play him as any other person.”

Cornerback Jonathon Mincy, who was burned multiple teams by Cooper in the game, echoed Ford’s sentiments, saying Auburn planned to play man-to-man coverage on him. Alabama won the game, 55-44, and is a win against Missouri away from a playoff bid.
