Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly puts quite a bit of blame on QB Everett Golson

“Sooner or later he’s got to take it on himself to take care of the football. I don’t know what else to do.”

Everett Golson turned the ball over a lot in Notre Dame’s loss to Arizona State on Saturday, one that knocked the Irish out of playoff contention. Head coach Brian Kelly appeared frustrated after the game and vented his anger toward his senior quarterback during his postgame press conference.

The press conference started with this odd exchange with a reporter, when Kelly interrupted to make sure Golson received the full blame for his turnovers before immediately backing down when reminded of what actually occurred (as well as things he previously said).

Reporter: Brian, how can you, I know they’re not all on Golson, especially the picks, but the fumbles, consistently-

Kelly: Why aren’t they all on Golson?

Reporter: Well, a couple were hit from behind, you mentioned a lineman didn’t cut the defensive end when one gets tipped-

Kelly: Right, that one, yeah

Reporter: The second pick-six went off of Robinson, it was a little behind him-

Kelly: Yeah, it was, he should have caught that ball.

Reporter: So not all six turnovers were on Golson-

Kelly: No, I agree.

Notre Dame wasn’t the only team to suffer a debilitating, playoff-eliminating loss that could be focused on one player -- Auburn lost to Texas A&M after center Reese Dismukes snapped the ball into his own butt. Head coach Gus Malzahn showed how coaches usually talk about player mistakes after losses, saying, “We’re not going to blame one person. We fought hard. We just didn’t get it done at the end.”
