Former Florida head coach Will Muschamp has found a new job as the defensive coordinator at Auburn, according to SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey. Phillip Marshall of Auburn Undercover first reported the news. Muschamp replaces Ellis Johnson, who left the staff just a day after the Tigers’ 55-44 loss to Alabama.

The longtime elite defensive coordinator was recently ousted as the head coach of the Florida Gators.
Before his stints at Texas and Florida, Muschamp ran the War Eagle defense in 2006 and 2007. Those Auburn defenses ranked No. 7 and No. 6 in the country, respectively, in points allowed per game.
Even before Muschamp and his 28-21 record officially left Florida, speculation began that he wouldn’t have to wait long to find his next gig. And as soon as Auburn and Texas A&M entered the defensive coordinator market, his name connected to both. South Carolina rumors also emerged, and Muschamp interviewed for the Houston head coaching job.
At 43 years old and with experience working under Nick Saban and Mack Brown, he’s still got a long and bright coaching career in front of him. Auburn has arguably made the biggest splash possible on a coordinator hire by bringing Muschamp in, and expectations should be sky-high for 2015.

His defenses consistently ranked well, even at Florida, where his 6-5 2014 team’s defense ranked No. 6 in yards allowed per play. His teams allowed 10 points or fewer in 15 of his 50 games in Gainesville, and he’ll be expected to bring similar production to complement a high-powered offense in Auburn.
Auburn ranked 10th in the SEC in scoring defense during the regular season, giving up 26.1 points per game.
