Wisconsin-Whitewater has won the latest meeting between the two programs that have completely dominated the last decade of Division III football, beating Mount Union in Salem, Virginia for the second year in a row.

This was the ninth time in the last 10 years that Wisconsin-Whitewater and Mount Union have met for the Division III championship. Warhawks head coach Lance Leipold now takes six national title rings to the MAC.

And so concludes one fourth of the NCAA’s football season, with the near-annual championship war between these two schools on hold, perhaps until next year. Over their decade-long struggle, Mount Union now has four title wins (including a 2012 win over St. Thomas, which is curiously not Wisconsin-Whitewater) to UWW’s six.
The Warhawks also extend their winning streak, already the longest in all of college football, to 32 games. It’s just Mount Union’s sixth loss in any game since the beginning of the 2006 season -- and all six of those losses have come to the Warhawks in the Stagg Bowl.
This game marks the end of an era at UW-Whitewater, as head coach Lance Leipold is leaving the program to take the head coaching job at Buffalo, making the jump all the way from Division III to FBS. The former Warhawk quarterback’s career in Whitewater ends with a head coaching record of 109-6. That is not a typo.
The Purple Raiders came as close to beating UWW as they have in years, but a string of mistakes gave the Warhawks too many opportunities. Mount Union quarterback Kevin Burke, the two-time D3 player of the year, was picked off five times all year entering the weekend, but four times Friday night. A 370-yard day by quarterback Matt Behrendt and 198 yards from scrimmage by Dennis Moore led the way for the Warhawks.
