Utah State wins third straight bowl

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY SportsThree years, three straight bowl wins for Utah State. Head coach Matt Wells has picked up right where Gary Andersen left off, as the Aggies beat UTEP 21-6 Saturday afternoon in the New Mexico Bowl.
Late in the first quarter, Jameill Showers connected with Ian Hamilton on a 53-yard pass, setting up a field goal that allowed UTEP to take the lead. It was by far the most successful play in the first half for the Miners -- their second-longest play was Aaron Jones’ 11-yard run.

In all four years of Mark Hudspeth’s tenure with the Ragin’ Cajuns, they have achieved that record with a win in this game, continuing the streak Saturday with a 16-3 win over Nevada in the postseason’s first bowl game.
1. As long as Mark Hudspeth is there, UL-L is a Sun Belt favorite. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ consistency under the former North Alabama head coach has been remarkable. They lose some important players this year, but seven starters return on this defense, which improved as the season went on and put together their best performance to date Saturday against the Wolf Pack. Nevada’s three points was the lowest in a bowl game since LSU was shut out in the 2012 BCS National Championship Game.

The first game of bowl season is finally here, and Louisiana-Lafayette meets Nevada in the New Orleans Bowl late Saturday morning. The Ragin’ Cajuns have won the New Orleans Bowl every year under fourth-year head coach Mark Hudspeth, and will try to do so again against the Wolf Pack.
Louisiana-Lafayette started the season 1-3 with non-conference blowout losses to Louisiana Tech, Ole Miss and Boise State, but rebounded strong once conference play came around. The Ragin’ Cajuns put together a 7-1 record against Sun Belt competition, most notably beating Texas State, Arkansas State and South Alabama in a tough three-game stretch. Their lone conference loss came to Appalachian State, costing them a share of the Sun Belt title.
