Watch the 2014 Sun Bowl: Arizona State vs. Duke game time, TV schedule, live online streaming

Can the Blue Devils upset one of the Pac-12’s best?

SB Nation 2014 College Football Guide

Two surging programs will square off in El Paso Saturday, each looking for their 10th win of the season. Duke and Arizona State play in this year’s Sun Bowl, with a high-scoring game looking likely.

After an early-season blowout loss to UCLA, Arizona State managed to work its way back into the playoff picture by recording consecutive victories over USC, Stanford, Washington, Utah and Notre Dame. Each of those schools was ranked when Arizona State played them (except for Washington), and Notre Dame was ranked No. 10 at the time of the game. The Sun Devils got bumped all the way up to No. 6 as a result ... and then dropped a road game to Oregon State. Arizona State ended up finishing third in a loaded Pac-12 South, but have a chance for redemption here.

Duke opened the season 4-0 with an easy non-conference slate, then dropped their ACC opener to Miami in late September. That was followed by four straight wins, including one against eventual Coastal champion Georgia Tech, but back-to-back losses to Virginia Tech and North Carolina ended the Blue Devils’ hopes of repeating as division winners.

The numbers

Rankings and records: Arizona State is No. 15 in the Playoff rankings and the AP Poll and No. 16 in the Coaches Poll. Duke is not ranked in any of the polls. Both schools are 9-3 this season.

Vegas: Arizona State opened as 9-point favorites. The line has since moved to 7.5. The over/under is set at 67 points.

Weather forecast: High of 53 and sunny.

Two things at stake

Duke is looking for their first bowl win since 1960.

A win for Arizona State would give them consecutive 10-win seasons for the first time since 1972-73, when they were in the WAC.

One big matchup

Arizona State passing offense vs. Duke passing defense. Senior quarterback Taylor Kelly was hampered by injuries this season, but still managed to throw for 20 touchdowns against five interceptions. Jaelen Strong (75 receptions, 1062 yards, 10 touchdowns) is one of the best receivers in the conference, and running back D.J. Foster (59 receptions, 646 yards, three touchdowns) is a major passing threat out of the backfield. Duke head coach David Cutcliffe may be known for his work with quarterbacks, but his Blue Devils team did a good job stopping them this year. Duke intercepted 11 passes and gave up 12 passing touchdowns, allowing more than 300 passing yards just once this season.
