Lane Kiffin didn’t win assistant coach of the year, but he might’ve won quote of the year
Ohio State offensive coordinator Tom Herman brought home the Broyles Award, but Kiffin won the ceremony.
Lane Kiffin’s first year as Alabama’s offensive coordinator has been an eventful one. The failed head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, Oakland Raiders and USC Trojans has helped lead the Crimson Tide to a No. 1 seed in the inaugural College Football Playoff, and helped land wide receiver Amari Cooper a spot as a Heisman finalist. He capped all that by being named a finalist for the Broyles Award, annually given to the top assistant coach in college football.
Kiffin and head coach Nick Saban have had some entertaining moments on the sideline this year, which Kiffin joked about at the ceremony:

Saban has given high praise to Kiffin when talking about him in the press:
“He’s a really good play caller and he’s done a great job for us this year. So I think I got exactly what I expected. I don’t think anyone else expected what I expected, to the point I even got criticized for doing it by a lot of people.”
Under Kiffin, Alabama ranked third in the SEC in scoring offense, third in passing offense and second in total offense.
