Bo Pelini goes from ‘fire me’ to contract extension in 4 months

It appears that Pelini will be the head coach at Nebraska for a while.

Phil Sears-USA TODAY Sports

Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini, who dared the Cornhuskers to fire him last fall, will be in Lincoln for a few more years. Pelini signed a five-year contract extension on Wednesday, according to CBS Sports’ Gregg Doyle:

The contract runs through the 2018 season.

It’s not exactly a new contract, as his deal has a stipulation that calls for an annual performance review, via Omaha.com:

Fans may recall last November when the 58-24 head coach was seemingly ready to be handed his walking papers. After 38-17 loss to Iowa in the Cornhuskers’ final regular-season game, Pelini was asked about his job status in the postgame interview. His response: “If they want to fire me, go ahead. I believe in what I have done and I don’t apologize for anything I have done.” It was Nebraska’s fourth loss of the season, marking the sixth consecutive year in which the Huskers suffered four defeats.

However, Nebraska AD Shawn Eichorst issued a statement supporting Pelini the day after the Iowa loss, and the Cornhuskers went on to upset Georgia, 24-19, in the Gator Bowl on New Year’s Day. It appears the vote of confidence, which is often a sign of bad things to come, was genuine.
