Former star Auburn tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen, a member of the Tigers' historic 2010 national championship team, has died after a car accident early Sunday morning. The story was first reported by 247sports and later confirmed by the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer. He was 23 years old.

Lutzenkirchen was involved in a single-car wreck at around 3:06 a.m. Sunday in Troup County, Georgia. The driver, Joseph Davis, a former Georgia baseball player, was also killed in the accident. Two other passengers were injured and taken to West Georgia Medical Center in LaGrange.
Lutzenkirchen, a former All-SEC selection, was a high-profile recruit out of Lassiter (Ga.) High School, signing with the Tigers as a member of their class of 2009. After a minimal role in his first season on campus, Lutzenkirchen caught the eventual game-winning touchdown against Alabama in 2010 and recorded a career-long 39-yard catch in the Tigers’ national championship game win over Oregon.
He was named a second-team All-SEC selection by the coaches and media after a seven-touchdown campaign in 2011, and holds school records for touchdown receptions by a tight end in both a season and a career. He was signed to a free agent contract by the Rams in 2013, but was cut due to a lingering hip injury that ended his senior year at Auburn early.
