Let us tell you a story of broken promises, Big 12 football, offseason boredom and more than a half-dozen confused fast food employees in the Pacific Northwest.
Baylor football not as popular in Oregon Dairy Queens as Art Briles thinks
A tale of fame, disappointment and Blizzards.

First, some background.
While arguing Monday at Big 12 Media Day that his quarterback Bryce Petty should have been a Heisman finalist last season, Baylor head coach Art Briles made a very specific point of reference. He claimed that Petty was a household name nationwide, specifically saying that even people at a Dairy Queen in Salem, Ore. would have heard of him.
The Oregonian’s John Canzano wonderfully decided to test that theory. A radio show production assistant called Salem’s six Dairy Queen locations to ask if they had heard of Petty. They had not.
Here are the results:
Some highlights:
- “Like a dog? Or a car?”
- “You know you called a fast food restaurant, right?”
- That same guy, who was familiar with former Wyoming QB Brett Smith but not Petty
- “He apparently has a lot of followers at Dairy Queens in Salem. Is that not the case?”
Update: 8:27 p.m.:Bryce Petty has issued a response.
