Texas Tech LB Sam Eguavoen says Red Raiders let Baylor ‘slip through the cracks’

That sounds like a little bit of revisionist history.

US PRESSWIRE

As college football players and coaches across the country have met with all sorts of media members in recent weeks, plenty of good trash talk has been spewed: Art Briles vs. Jimbo Fisher, Dabo Swinney vs. Randy Edsall, Steve Spurrier vs. Dabo Swinney, just to name a few choice beefs. Now, we've got Texas Tech linebacker Sam Eguavoen vs. Baylor and TCU.

Eguavoen has the dates against the Bears and Horned Frogs circled on his calendar as revenge games. The Red Raiders dropped a fairly one-sided game to Baylor last season, the last of a five-game losing streak. Despite the Bears’ unprecedented success in 2013, Eguavoen wasn’t that impressed, per Fox Sports Southwest.

“I’m looking forward to shutting up Baylor,” he said. “They feel like they just got the edge on everybody and they really don’t. We were up on them last year and we just let them slip through the cracks.”

Yes, Tech led Baylor, 20-7, with 3:25 left in the first quarter. But the Bears went on to claim a 29-point win, 63-34. Over the final 46:39 of game time, Baylor outscored the Raiders, 56-14. This year’s game will be played at a neutral site: AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

As for TCU, Eguavoen isn’t mad about a 2013 loss — Tech beat the Horned Frogs, 20-10 — he’s upset about losing a coach and alum to an in-state rival. Sonny Cumbie, who played under center in Lubbock from 2000-04 and coached wide receivers, left to become co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in Fort Worth.

“He threw all of us off when he left,” Eguavoen said. “When he went to TCU, I was like ‘OK?’ When we hear TCU on the schedule, we’re thinking ‘Sonny Cumbie, we’re coming for you!’”
