Oklahoma RB Joe Mixon suspended for season after misdemeanor charge

Mixon allegedly knocked out a woman in an altercation.

Update, August 18: Freshman Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon was to be charged with one count of an act resulting in gross injury, a misdemeanor charge, rather than a felony assault and battery, Norman police announced Friday.

Monday, OU finalized the blue-chip’s playing status:

Original, July 30: Oklahoma true freshman running back Joe Mixon will not take place in football activities after an alleged assault of a woman late last week in Norman. The school announced the news Wednesday evening on the football team’s Twitter account.

Mixon was allegedly involved in a “serious altercation” with a woman at a restaurant early on July 25, the morning after his 18th birthday. The woman reportedly suffered multiple broken bones and a witness claimed the woman “was knocked out and blood was all over the floor.” Mixon’s lawyer released a statement earlier in the week saying his client acted in self-defense and “has done nothing wrong.”

A five-star recruit and the top-rated signee in the Sooners’ 2014 recruiting class, Mixon was expected to figure heavily into an Oklahoma running back rotation that lost its top two contributors from last season. No charges have been filed at this time, but police have confirmed they are investigating the incident.
