College football’s first major preseason top 25 poll of 2014 is out, released by USA Today. As expected, Florida State takes the No. 1 spot, followed by a mix of SEC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Oregon.

The poll formerly attached to the BCS has the defending national champions ranked right where they left off. It remains to be seen whether preseason top 25 rankings influence the College Football Playoff selection committee.

A few things to know about the 2014 Coaches Poll, other than who ranks where:
1. The Coaches Poll, theoretically voted on by coaches (the 2014 list), no longer determines anything that happens on the field. It’s now separate from the BCS standings. This is in part because the BCS no longer exists. The only rankings that now factor into competition are those produced by the Playoff selection committee beginning in October, though we’ll have to wait and see how much those are swayed by the AP and Coaches polls.
2. The Coaches Poll does still determine who wins the beloved crystal football, which will tend to become one of many items that accompany the new national championship trophy. The crystal football will try to convince you of its indefatigable majesty, though.
