College football head coaches describe their team in 1 word

The Big Ten is very, very hungry.

Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy had a neat idea as the offseason winds down: ask every Power 5 conference head coach (and Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly) to describe their team in one word. You can find them all here: ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC.

There are some absolute gold mines. Four Big Ten coaches said "hungry": Maryland's Randy Edsall, Minnesota's Jerry Kill, Purdue's Darrell Hazell and Rutgers' Kyle Flood. North Carolina's Larry Fedora took it up another notch with "ravenous" (we agree). "Hungry" ended up taking the crown, with nine of the 65 coaches polled answering with the word.

Other highlights:

  • Louisville's Bobby Petrino, TCU's Gary Patterson, Washington's Chris Petersen and LSU's Les Miles all went with "unknown." Two of those are first-year coaches. Two are very much not. Alabama's Nick Saban chose a slightly more negative version, going with "untested."
  • Syracuse's Scott Shafer answered with "hard-nosed," which is kind of cheating because it's two words with a line in the middle. Kansas' Charlie Weis didn't even mess around with a hyphen, full-on ignoring the rules and going with "quiet confidence."
  • Art Briles' Baylor team is "mad." Watch out, Big 12.
  • Georgia's Mark Richt opted for "Wow." Wow.

Our final pairing is presented without comment.

  • Arizona State’s Todd Graham: “Character.”
  • South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier: “Decent.”
