Kliff Kingsbury has only been at Texas Tech for one season, but even after an 8-5 season, the fan base in Lubbock is embracing him. On the eve of the 2014 season, Red Raiders fans learned they’ll be seeing a lot more of Kingsbury in the future, as he reportedly signed a massive contract extension through 2020.
Kliff Kingsbury reportedly gets contract for $3.5 million per year, through 2020
Kingsbury will be one of the highest-paid coaches in the country after just one season as a head coach.

#TexasTech & Kliff Kingsbury agree on a new deal. Thru 2020 season. guaranteed base of $24.2 MIL & an avg of $3.5 M per yr, sources tell fox
— Bruce Feldman (@BruceFeldmanCFB) August 29, 2014 That puts Kingsbury in esteemed company nationally, despite his inexperience and mediocre first-year record.
So Texas Tech made a second year head coach with an 8-5 record a top 15 paid coach in the country.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) August 29, 2014 Kingsbury is just 35 years old and a former quarterback at Texas Tech. Before arriving back at his alma mater, he was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Texas A&M. The Red Raiders won their first seven games of last season — including the first four conference games — but due to a back-loaded conference schedule, they lost five in a row to end the regular season, finishing 7-5 overall and 4-5 in the Big 12. However, they recovered to beat Pac-12 South champion Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl.
But Kingsbury is known more for his antics off the field than on it. He’s had a dance-off on the practice field with his players, and he says he flirts with the moms of players to seal the deal in recruiting. He also replied with a handwritten note to an Arkansas fan who “broke up” with him.
Given all the entertainment he provides, we’re happy to know Kliff will be around for seasons to come. We know Texas Tech fans will be, too.
