How to watch Arkansas St. vs. Miami: Game guide, TV/streaming, more

Will Miami get back on track?

Two teams looking for their first wins against FBS competition in 2014 will square off Saturday at Sun Life Stadium, when Miami (FL) hosts Arkansas State.

The Hurricanes started the season with a 31-13 loss to Louisville — their second straight loss to the Cardinals — in a performance that left many wondering if Miami was ready to compete for what appeared to be a wide-open Coastal Division. True freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya has struggled in his first two games as a starter, completing 56.9 percent of his passes for 6.9 yards per attempt with more interceptions (four) than touchdowns (three). Star running back Duke Johnson has delivered as promised since his return, with the junior averaging 6.45 yards per carry on the season.

Arkansas State defeated Montana State 37-10 in its opener under new head coach Blake Anderson, but struggled on the road in its second game. The Red Wolves lost 34-19 to Tennessee, suffering in large part from penalties (nine for 75 yards) and poor third-down defense (the Volunteers were successful on nine of their 18 conversions on the day). Arkansas State has a talented backfield and a deep secondary, and could pose problems for Kaaya and the Miami offense.

The numbers

Rankings and records: Neither team is ranked. Both are 1-1 on the season. Miami holds the 1-0 all-time lead in the series.

Vegas: Miami opened as a 17-point favorite. The line is now at 16.5. The over/under is set at 52.5 points.

Weather forecast: 86 degrees and thunderstorms

Two things at stake

For Miami, it’s all about getting Brad Kaaya more comfortable. The quarterback struggled against Louisville, and this should be a decent test before a road game against Nebraska and the full brunt of conference play.

The Sun Belt looks remarkably wide open after Louisiana-Lafayette’s early-season loss to Louisiana Tech. A win here would certainly make the Red Wolves one of the favorites.

One big matchup

Fredi Knighten vs. Denzel Perryman. Just about the only thing Miami did well against Louisville was put pressure on quarterback Will Gardner. The 6’0, 242-pound Perryman picked up one of those sacks, and was a consistent presence in the Cardinals’ backfield. He’ll need to play well on Saturday, as Arkansas State has a pair of weapons on the ground at their disposal. Quarterback Knighten has run for 158 yards and a score this season (while also passing for 385 and two more touchdowns), while junior running back Michael Gordon has 85 yards on just 14 carries.
