Jameis Winston suspension shrinks Clemson-FSU spread by a TD

The line had already shrunk by four points, and now it’s down almost seven.

Tyler Smith

Jameis Winston was suspended for the first half of Saturday's game against Clemson for yelling an obscenity on campus. That means little-used backup Sean Maguire will play the first half. That's unfortunate timing for the Seminoles, since Clemson is one of the best opponents they will face all season.

The game went off the board in Vegas as soon as there was word that there might be a suspension, and the line has dropped considerably since the suspension, according to Odds Shark. Originally at 20.5 points, the line at 5Dimes has slipped to 16.5. It’s now at 17 points at Top Bet.

Florida State is still a phenomenal team without Jameis Winston, and the Seminoles are not likely to lose the game even with Maguire at quarterback for the first half. However, the suspension will have more if an impact on Vegas, where margin of victory is as important as who wins. It will be interesting to see how the line moves throughout the rest of the week.

Update: The lowest line monitored by Odds Shark is now Bovada at -14, almost a full touchdown lower than the line had been at most books before Winston's half-game suspension was announced. Other books list the spread at -14.5 or -15. FSU announced Friday night that Winston will miss the entire game.
