SMU is looking for a new head coach, following June Jones’ surprise resignation two games into the season, and they may have a candidate in mind. Fox Sports’ Bruce Feldman reported Sunday night the Mustangs are “intrigued” by former Texas head coach Mack Brown, currently an analyst with ESPN.
Mack Brown has the perfect Mack Brown job. Would he leave it for SMU?
The Mustangs are reportedly interested in hiring the former Longhorns head coach.

Brown resigned from the position with the Longhorns in December, ending a 16-year tenure that included 10 bowl wins, two Big 12 championships and a national title. At 63, he would be one of the oldest coaching hires in recent memory, but Jones was 54 at the time of his hiring and, as Feldman notes, current SMU basketball coach Larry Brown was hired at the age of 71.
There are a number of candidates who could replace Jones at SMU, but Brown’s is the biggest name out there. What do we make of this?
Why it could happen
Brown kind of didn’t want to leave Texas in the first place, so a return to coaching (in the state!) could tempt him. It makes great sense for SMU, as well -- there aren’t that many national-title winning coaches available (hi, Gene Chizik!), and this would be a huge publicity boost for the program.
Why it won’t happen
Money is not a factor here, as Brown made quite a bit of it at Texas and continues to do so at ESPN. Speaking of ESPN, it’s pretty much the ideal job for him: he loved to talk to the press while at Texas, and now he gets to chat about football for a living without the stresses of running a football program. This job would be a stressful one -- it’s a complete rebuild, and one that might take more time than Brown is willing to put into it.
A Tennessee native, Brown has coached all throughout the Southeast and Big 12, so SMU being in Texas might not be as big a factor as it seems.
Likelihood: 2/10
SMU can dream, but it’s hard to imagine Brown leaving his current position for a job like this one. It’s not out of the question to think he’ll return to coaching, but the Mustangs are not an attractive program at the moment.
