Texas vs. BYU final score: 3 things we learned from another Cougar blowout

The Longhorns have some work ahead of them.

Brendan Maloney-USA TODAY Sports

Another year, another BYU blowout of Texas. The 2014 version was worse than 2013’s, surprisingly enough. Last year, the game was in Provo and ended 40-21 in favor of the Cougars. This year’s game was in Austin, and BYU strolled to a 41-7 victory.

The Cougars took a 6-0 lead into halftime, but scored four straight touchdowns in the third quarter to quickly expand that to 34-0. The highlight was the first of the four, which saw BYU quarterback Taysom Hill hurdle a hapless Texas defender en route to the 30-yard score.

Three things we learned

1. This Texas rebuild might take a bit longer than anticipated. So, uh, maybe Manny Diaz wasn’t the only issue? Texas somehow managed to look worse against BYU than they did last season. Swoopes struggled in his first career start -- not unexpected for a young player who has struggled with his consistency through the air. The bigger issue came on the ground, where the Longhorns averaged just 2.4 yards on 34 carries.

2. BYU is probably very good. Texas may not be up to usual standards, but they’re not a bad FBS team. They’re one week removed from a 38-7 beatdown of North Texas (who blasted SMU 43-6 Saturday), and this result says as much about the Cougars as it does about the Longhorns. Taysom Hill did his dang thing again, but the most impressive performance? The BYU defense, holding up in the post-Kyle Van Noy era. The Cougars have a friendly schedule (tough games against Houston, Utah State, UCF and Boise State all look significantly less tough now), a strong defense and a dangerous playmaker at quarterback. Things could get very interesting come December for the Cougars.

Hey, we finally joined Facebook!

3. Without a vastly improved offensive line, Texas may struggle to find wins. The Longhorns failed to consistently move the ball without three of their starting offensive linemen, and their status will be something to watch closely in Austin. Texas faces four ranked opponents in the next six games, including UCLA, Baylor and Oklahoma. The good news? Two of those are home games. The bad news? That didn't exactly stop BYU.
