The first normal week of ranking is underway, as college football kicks back into its regular schedule after a hectic Week 1. Below is the composite top 25 heading into Week 3 -- as you can see, Sagarin is relatively unimpressed so far with Florida State, which tops every other ranking used here. (For more on the four rankings we’re using, see below.)
2014 college football rankings, Week 3: Oregon tops composite top 25
Combining the two biggest human college football polls and two long-running computer standings in one ranking, for your convenience.

There will be no official College Football Playoff selection committee ranking this week. That doesn’t begin until October 28. So for now, these are the most representative rankings available.

Week 2 was a hectic one for ranked teams. Nebraska just barely survived FCS McNeese State. Kansas State came away with a come-from-behind victory against definitely-not-FCS-we-swear Iowa State. There were two matchups between top-15 teams: USC defeated Stanford after a lackluster red zone effort from the Cardinal, while Oregon ran away from Michigan State. And Virginia Tech came into Columbus and upset Ohio State, while BYU traveled to Austin to beat down Texas.
The four rankings we use:
The Associated Press Top 25: The longest-running and best-respected human poll. Didn’t have any official bearing on the latter years of the BCS, and won’t have any official bearing on the Playoff. Expect it to set the course for the committee, however, as most outlets (including SB Nation) will use the AP’s rankings as the standard until the committee takes over in October. Usually comes out Sundays a little after noon.
The USA Today Coaches Poll: Formerly part of the BCS, and now just a poll. It tends to be more conservative than the AP’s. Though polling athletic departments in order to rank other athletic departments is dubious, we still want multiple human polls in here, and it’s the other big one. Releases early Sunday afternoons.
Jeff Sagarin’s Sagarin Rating: An early-morning insta-ranking that combines three of Sagarin’s computer formulas into one. This is not the formula the BCS used, which excluded margin of victory.
Football Outsiders’ F/+ rating: A synthesis of ratings by smart persons Bill Connelly and Brian Fremeau and our personal go-to overall team stat. It tends to come out later than the others.
