Former Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith called current starter Cardale Jones to show his support ahead of Monday’s national title game, per SB Nation’s Steven Godfrey. Smith called Jones Tuesday, saying “I’ll do anything I can to help you not feel the way I felt walking off that field.”
Ohio State Heisman winner rooting for Cardale Jones to avoid title heartbreak
Troy Smith has been there before.
Smith won the Heisman Trophy in 2006 while at Ohio State, but his Buckeyes were demolished by Florida in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game. The Gators won 41-14, while Smith completed four of 14 passes for 35 yards and an interception, rushing 10 times for -29 yards.
This is just the third start of Jones’ career. The redshirt sophomore and former three-star recruit was slated to be Ohio State’s third-string quarterback this season. After Braxton Miller suffered a season-ending injury in the preseason and JT Barrett went down during the regular season finale against Michigan, Jones has stepped up to lead the team to wins against Wisconsin and Alabama, helping the Buckeyes end their SEC title curse and start a new story.
