Sean Payton, Chip Kelly potential USC coaching candidates, according to NFL Network

The most prestigious available college coaching opening could lure an NFL coach.

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and Philadelphia Eagles coach Chip Kelly are potential candidates for the open head coaching position at Southern Cal, according to the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Payton has been mentioned for open positions in the NFL in recent weeks. The Super Bowl-winning coach has two years left on his contract, making a trade with another franchise a possibility. A move to college would be more difficult, with Payton or Southern Cal likely paying compensation to the Saints to release him from his contract. Payton’s daughter is a freshman at Pepperdine, as referenced by Rapoport.

Kelly has been a betting favorite for the USC job since Steve Sarkisian was fired last week. He said last week that neither he nor his agent have been contacted by any college aside from the fictional North Texas State Armadillos. A 22-point win over Payton’s Saints last week has eased the pressure slightly on Kelly, whose Eagles started the season 1-3.
