Nebraska blows yet another 4th quarter lead in 30-28 loss to Northwestern

Cornhuskers fade down the stretch again in fifth loss of the season.

Steven Branscombe-USA TODAY Sports

For the fourth time in eight games, the Nebraska Cornhuskers dropped a fourth-quarter lead in Saturday's loss to Northwestern. The Cornhuskers took a 22-20 lead five seconds into the fourth quarter, but the Nebraska defense gave up 10 points on consecutive Northwestern possessions. The Wildcats eventually won 30-28.

Previously this season, Nebraska lost on a last-second Hail Mary against BYU, dropped a 13-point fourth-quarter lead in a loss at Illinois, and fell to a late field goal against Wisconsin. The Huskers’ fifth loss, ironically, came after a 23-point fourth-quarter comeback forced overtime against Miami, which Nebraska promptly lost on a Tommy Armstrong interception and Miami field goal.

By way of comparison, Nebraska lost three fourth-quarter leads in seven years under previous head coach Bo Pelini:

Nebraska, now 3-5 on the season, has already lost more games in 2015 than Pelini lost in any of those seven campaigns. The Cornhuskers will have to win three of their last four just to qualify for a bowl; Nebraska last missed the postseason in 2007, its final season under Bill Callahan.
