SEC refs’ review of Mizzou-Vandy fumble call is a comedy of errors

How did this SEC officiating crew miss an obvious Missouri fumble? Let’s count the ways.

Missouri fumbled the opening kickoff against Vanderbilt. The Commodore covering the kick made a form tackle. The ball clearly came out almost immediately. Vanderbilt recovered. It was a clear fumble.

Or at least it was a clear fumble to everyone but the SEC officiating crew calling the game. Let’s count the errors.

  1. The officials first ruled that this was not a fumble, based on forward progress. This is after the player had been stopped and tackled in the spot of the fumble and lost the ball almost immediately after contact. The referee said there was a whistle between the tackle and the fumble, but not even the SEC Network crew calling the game could say they heard it.
  2. The referees decided to review the play. The only problem: Forward progress is not reviewable unless in regard to a first-down spot.
  3. The replay official reviewed the play and confirmed the call, again despite no evidence of if and when the whistle blew.

Needless to say, Commodore fans are taking it well.

Despite all of this, Vanderbilt leads Missouri 7-0 early in the second quarter.
