A little past halfway through the season, our eight voters have combined their top fours into one. Above, Dan Rubenstein reveals the top four and is joined by Bud Elliott and Steven Godfrey, who explain their picks in detail.
If the season ended today, your College Football Playoff would be Clemson, LSU and ...
We’re still a week away from the Playoff committee’s rankings, but the SB Nation Selection Committee has been doing this since September.
We also include a note or two from another voter. This time, it's Jason Kirk on why Baylor shouldn't be ruled out because of an injury leaving its offense in the hands of true freshman Jarrett Stidham:
Our panelists use different criteria. Some of us try to POWER RANK a strong Playoff by looking for the four we’d take to beat any others. Some of us try to rank on resume and pool only the most deserving teams. Some of us rank Baylor, and some don’t. All of these things can be fine.
Either way, it would be unfair to rank and then de-rank a team for an injury that hasn’t impacted its season yet. Imagine if the BCS had had the power to keep Florida State out of the computer era’s first title game due to its quarterback injury.
Since the point of this is looking at what teams have accomplished IRL, there’s no reason to worry about what will happen if Baylor’s backup plays like a freshman, drone aircraft become so inescapable that humans can only find privacy in their dreams, or anything in between.
Baylor’s best case is having a backup as good as Ohio State’s was last year. Baylor’s worst case is no longer playing like a Playoff team. At this moment, neither matters, because neither has happened yet.
