Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield out for second half against TCU after helmet-to-helmet hit

The rising Heisman candidate took a big hit from the Horned Frogs ... then stayed in the game for almost a full quarter.

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield will miss the second half of the Sooners' Saturday night game against TCU after a blow to the head in the second quarter, ABC's broadcast announced just after halftime.

Mayfield took a big helmet-to-helmet hit while scrambling in the second quarter against the Horned Frogs, one that resulted in the ejection of TCU linebacker Ty Summers.

Mayfield remained in the game for the rest of the second quarter.

But when the Sooners returned to the field for the second half, Mayfield did so without his helmet -- and obviously emotional. Reporter Holly Rowe confirmed Mayfield was out for the second half shortly afterward.

In Mayfield's absence, Oklahoma has turned to former starter Trevor Knight under center.
