The top four seeds in the field are Illinois State, Jacksonville State, McNeese State and four-time defending champions North Dakota State. Those four are joined by James Madison, Portland State, Richmond and Charleston Southern as the eight seeded teams, rounding out the teams that earned first round byes.

The 24-team tournament is single elimination, with 10 automatic bids and 14 at-large. The seeded teams host the second-round games.
