In a rare twist of an oft-repeated narrative, Notre Dame got a touchdown thanks to a bad replay review ... and Stanford ended up winning the game because of it.
A blown replay gave Notre Dame a touchdown that actually helped Stanford win the game
Notre Dame got a touchdown thanks to a bad call ... and Stanford won because of it?

Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer appeared to score a go-ahead touchdown to give the Fighting Irish a 36-35 lead over Stanford with 30 seconds left. But review of the play made it look like he was down on the field.
Review appeared to show that Kizer’s entire lower body was down while the ball was short of the end zone. Take a peek at the stills of the moment when his knees and hip hit the ground:
It sure looks like the ball is a few inches short of the touchdown plane. Live, the play looked like a TD. But after review, it’s not quite clear how they managed to let the play stand.
If Kizer was down on the field, Notre Dame would’ve had several chances to score from the one-inch line. The clock would’ve run. Notre Dame probably would’ve scored a touchdown eventually. And Stanford would’ve had less time to mount a game-winning drive.
Instead, the Cardinal had 30 whole seconds. And they moved the ball down the field and Conrad Ukropina drilled a 46-yard game-winning field goal as the clock expired.
So don’t complain the next time the refs give a touchdown to your team’s opponents. Maybe they’re just trying to help.
