Everything to know about Texas A&M’s QB disaster right now

Good morning! This is the Read Option, your early college football roundup and an underrecruited JUCO ready to seize the wheel.

Kyler Murray is now officially the second five-star QB to leave Texas A&M this month. The new guy, Jake Hubenak, is definitely not a five-star, but his teammates are rallying behind him on social media. And the last time an A&M QB was just some unheralded dude, that dude won a Heisman, so maybe things aren’t so bad?

Murray’s barred from transferring to teams on A&M’s schedule, which doesn’t include Texas, no matter how much we complain. Horns fans are hesitant about adding the former Charlie Strong recruit, but they will happily take this tight end recruit from A&M.

This almost counts as A&M drama, too: Aggie defensive coordinator John Chavis’ lawsuit against his old school now includes LSU admitting it changed his contract after he signed it.

While Murray might be leaving in part to pursue pro baseball, another decided to pursue football. Brandon McIlwain, a four-star Pennsylvania QB, elected to pass on the MLB Draft and enroll early at South Carolina, with SC’s baseball coach upset at recruiting media in the wake of the decision. South Carolina will now have him for at least two football seasons, as he is not eligible for the MLB again until 2018.

Kyle Allen, the other five-star leaving A&M, reportedly favors Houston now, because life can apparently get even better for newly extended and iced-out Tom Herman.

Alabama has four players on the consensus All-America team, while nobody else has more than two.

Get one roundup of college football stories, rumors, game breakdowns, and Jim Harbaugh oddity in your inbox every morning.

Jim Harbaugh followed a commitment from a four-star Florida State legacy with a commitment from the No. 1 running back recruit. Michigan has a real shot to finish with a top-five class.

SI and the WSJ made some typos, so here’s our guide to telling Mark Dantonio and Mike D’Antoni apart. Seriously, there’s not an apostrophe in “Dantonio.”

It is extremely difficult to play left tackle as a true freshman in the SEC West, but Greg Little has a shot to have a huge influence at Ole Miss in replacing Laremy Tunsil or Fahn Cooper.

The best game of bowl season’s opening day might be, as it usually is, the Sugar Bowl Lite.

And the worst bowl of all time might be the Cure Bowl, but many of us are still gonna watch it. And not just watch it:

Florida lost a second commitment in as many days, but sources told Bud that UF was looking to clear room in its class and has much more talented targets on deck.

Whenever someone argues one team should be ranked ahead of another just because of head-to-head results, ask them how they celebrated Toledo’s many 2015 championships.

One of Texas Tech’s most talented players is suspended, and three others are leaving.

Like Hard Knocks, but for recruiting. Notre Dame’s latest commit says a Showtime series impacted his choice.

What will Mizzou’s offense look like under former Heisman runner-up Josh Heupel?

Pro Football Focus says Kirby Smart is inheriting the most talent of any new head coach. USC has signed a higher percentage of elite players over the last four seasons, but Georgia has signed so many more that I’d agree in giving the edge to UGA.

The father of Dylan Moses, the No. 1 recruit in 2017, says LSU and Alabama are recruiting him at running back, but that he wants to play linebacker. Suggestion: the schools offered him in the eighth grade for a reason. Let him play whatever position he wants!

No defensive coordinator? No problem! Auburn beats Ohio State for a four-star defensive tackle from Georgia.
