Stanford vs. Iowa odds, Rose Bowl 2016: Cardinal betting favorite vs. Hawkeyes

Arguably the two best non-playoff teams in the nation meet in the Rose Bowl this New Year’s Day with Stanford favored over Iowa.

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Stanford Cardinal are 9-1 straight up and 7-3 against the spread in their last 10 games coming off a win in their previous game. The Cardinal can keep that dominance going with a win in the Rose Bowl this New Year's Day against the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Stanford is a 6-point betting favorite on Friday according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The betting favorite is 6-2 SU in the last eight Rose Bowl games.

After starting their season off with a fluky 16-6 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats, the Stanford Cardinal established themselves as one of the most dominant teams in the nation the rest of the way.

Stanford went 11-1 SU and 9-3 ATS over its final 12 games en route to a Pac-12 championship in a run that included two wins over USC and a win over Notre Dame. A two-point loss to Oregon cost the Cardinal a likely playoff spot, but the team still has plenty to play for here in the Rose Bowl.

The Cardinal is 12-4 ATS in its last 16 games overall and 5-1 ATS in its last six bowl appearances, per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Cardinal vs. Hawkeyes OddsShark Matchup Report

The Iowa Hawkeyes ran the table in the regular season playing old school, smash-mouth football, running the ball well and finishing 13th in the nation in scoring defense allowing 18.5 points per game.

Iowa entered the Big Ten Championship with a 12-0 SU and 7-5 ATS record, but fell short in a 16-13 loss to the Michigan State Spartans. The Hawkeyes are just 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against Pac-12 opponents, but have gone 7-2 SU in their last nine games coming off a loss.

Friday's total is set at 53.5 points for the Rose Bowl. The UNDER is 3-1 in Iowa's last four January games and 6-2 in Stanford's last eight games against Big Ten teams.

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey was one of the most explosive players in all of college football this season, and now he'll have a chance to show off his skills on the national stage. Iowa has had a strong season, but the Cardinal is a step above and should come away with a win and cover in Pasadena.
