Oklahoma State vs. Ole Miss odds, 2016 Sugar Bowl: Cowboys underdogs against Rebels

Two high-octane offenses meet in the Sugar Bowl this Friday night with the Oklahoma State Cowboys underdogs vs the Mississippi Rebels.

Matt Bush-USA TODAY Sports

The Mississippi Rebels have won six of their last seven bowl games. The Rebels will be looking for another bowl win in the Sugar Bowl this Friday night squaring off against the Big 12’s Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Mississippi is a 7-point betting favorite in New Orleans, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The betting favorite is 0-3 straight up and against the spread in the last three Sugar Bowls.

When the dust had settled on Mississippi’s season in 2015, the final record was a respectable 9-3 SU and 7-4-1 ATS. Strangely, the Rebels passed some of their toughest tests of the season with flying colors, picking up double-digit wins over Texas A&M, LSU and Mississippi State, as well as upsetting Alabama 43-37 in Tuscaloosa.

But the team also lost three games to Florida, Memphis and Arkansas; all three games that Ole Miss was favored by a touchdown or more in. The Rebels seemed to play to the level of their opponent through most of the season.

Ole Miss is 4-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS in its last four bowl games played in the month of January per the OddsShark College Football Database. Two of those four bowl wins have come against the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Cowboys vs. Rebels OddsShark Matchup Report

The Oklahoma State Cowboys played their way into the national spotlight in 2015, going 10-0 SU and 6-4 ATS through the first 10 games of the season. They’ve put themselves in position for a potential Big 12 championship and playoff berth.

But the Cowboys couldn’t get it done at home against Baylor and Oklahoma in the final two games of the season, succumbing to the high-powered offenses of those two opponents. Oklahoma State averaged 41.2 points per game on the season, but was held to 29 points per game in those two games.

Friday night’s total is set at 67.5. The OVER is 6-0 in Oklahoma State’s last six games.

Both of these teams have outstanding offenses, which should lead to plenty of big plays and lots of scoring. But Mississippi’s superiority on defense should give the Rebels a few more stops and the eventual edge for a win and cover in the Sugar Bowl.
