Steve Spurrier’s best quotes from 2015 SEC Media Days

“I forgot to get fired and I’m not going to cheat.”

South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier’s podium time at SEC Media Days is an annual tradition. Remember when he demanded Notre Dame join a conference? What about that time he gave us a history lesson on the Alamo?

Spurrier spoke to the assembled press Tuesday in Hoover, Ala., and once again did not disappoint. Did you know he’s the youngest coach in the SEC to win four straight bowl games? You do now.

Some of his best quotes:

“A lot of familiar faces out there. After a lot of years coming out to this event, I figured a bunch of you guys would have retired by now.”

“We were 7-6, the same as Tennessee, the same as Arkansas, and I think they’re celebrating big seasons last season so we were celebrating also. We were doing cartwheels and high-fiving after that Independence Bowl game.”

“I think I get out more during the offseason than most coaches, and I know I work out more during the season than most coaches.”

“If one of the NFL teams offer Coach Saban $15 million a year, it would make that $7.2 million look paltry.”

In 2007, Spurrier made his position clear on the Confederate flag in South Carolina, saying he believed it should be taken down. Governor Nikki Haley signed a bill last week to take the flag down, and Spurrier was asked about it again Tuesday.

“I applaud our governor for setting the initiative to remove the flag, and obviously it was received very well by just about everyone in our state and around the country, and obviously all of us in college sports know the importance of equality, race relations, everyone getting along. So certainly I think all the coaches, certainly all over South Carolina, [were] happy and glad to bring the flag down.”

Spurrier was also asked about player discipline after two Florida State players were recently accused of punching women.

“I’ve always had a rule as a coach that if you ever hit a girl, you’re finished.”

Would you like some more? We all would. Here is a quick minute of Spurrier over the years at Media Days:
