— Brett McMurphy (@McMurphyESPN) July 14, 2015 In 2007, Spurrier made his position clear on the Confederate flag in South Carolina, saying he believed it should be taken down. Governor Nikki Haley signed a bill last week to take the flag down, and Spurrier was asked about it again Tuesday.
“I applaud our governor for setting the initiative to remove the flag, and obviously it was received very well by just about everyone in our state and around the country, and obviously all of us in college sports know the importance of equality, race relations, everyone getting along. So certainly I think all the coaches, certainly all over South Carolina, [were] happy and glad to bring the flag down.”
Spurrier was also asked about player discipline after two Florida State players were recently accused of punching women.
“I’ve always had a rule as a coach that if you ever hit a girl, you’re finished.”
