QB Vernon Adams’ Oregon transfer may be in jeopardy, or maybe not

The Ducks may have to look elsewhere at the quarterback position.

James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

Top FCS transfer quarterback Vernon Adams’ future at Oregon could potentially be in trouble, as he failed to graduate during the spring term at Eastern Washington, according to The Oregonian. Adams announced he was transferring to Oregon in February after a few years as one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in the country at Eastern Washington, and was expected to compete for the Ducks’ starting job.

Adams had been admitted at Oregon and was ready to enroll and play immediately, but that was contingent upon him graduating from Eastern Washington first. He walked at EWU’s graduation ceremony but evidently did not complete a required math class afterwards. Summer school graduates have not yet been added to the graduate list, though, and reportedly both Adams and Oregon knew that his graduation would be in the summer, not for the spring term.

The situation seems to boil down to this: If Adams completes his summer school class without issue, he should be good to go for the Ducks.

In 2014, Adams completed over 66 percent of his passes for 3,483 yards, 35 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, including an incredible game against Washington in which he threw for 475 yards with seven touchdowns and no interceptions in a loss. The Eagles went 11-3, winning the Big Sky title but losing in the FCS playoff quarterfinal to Illinois State. Adams was able to lead Eastern Washington to a win over Pac-12 squad Oregon State in 2013. The Beavers were ranked No. 25 at the time.

If Adams doesn't make it to Eugene for the season, former Marcus Mariota backup Jeff Lockie appears to be the overwhelming favorite to take over for the Heisman-winning Mariota. Last season, he completed 21 of his 28 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown,
