Your first look at UNLV’s new Las Vegas-themed football field

The Rebels are embracing Vegas under new coach Tony Sanchez.

In an SB Nation exclusive, UNLV has released images of new Vegas-inspired field turf being installed at Sam Boyd Stadium for 2015.

The design is based on the Neon Boneyard, a Las Vegas museum dedicated to vintage Vegas signage. The new end zones will include a nod to the iconic “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. Yardages will be placed over diamonds reminiscent of the Stardust Casino, with the 50-yard line highlighted by a starburst design from the “Welcome” sign.

The changes are part of a $1.2 million stadium upgrade.

New UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez, who was a legendary high school coach in Vegas before taking over the Rebels program in December, has highlighted the team’s ties to Las Vegas during his nine months in charge. UNLV will unveil new helmets featuring the “Welcome” sign and new uniforms with “LAS VEGAS” reading down the side of the pant legs.

“Las Vegas is so important to our University and our football program wants to be a big part of the Las Vegas community,” Sanchez said. “We are fortunate to live in one of the world’s great destinations and these designs are one of the ways we will proudly represent our city.”

The Rebels open their 2015 season at Northern Illinois on September 5, and will break in their new turf on September 12 against UCLA.
