Calvin Ridley ran about 50 yards for a 5-yard Alabama gain

The freshman sensation makes even short gains special.

ESPN

Alabama freshman wide receiver Calvin Ridley has stepped into Amari Cooper's shoes and run well in them for the Crimson Tide in 2015. On Monday night, he added one of the best 5-yard gains you'll ever see against Clemson in the College Football Playoff national championship game.

The screen to Ridley on one side of the field was well covered, so the freshman simply cut it all the way back to the other side of the field, making Clemson defenders miss and catching fine blocks.

But Ridley’s extra effort almost cost Alabama. While he burned several seconds running around, Ridley going out of bounds at the end of the play gave Clemson just enough time to drive down the field for a field goal try before the end of the first half. Alabama blocked the kick, so the point is moot and this play can be celebrated as an ultimately meaningless aesthetic treat.
