VIRGINIA TECH’S FULLBACK THREW A TOUCHDOWN PASS TO ANOTHER FULLBACK

The Hokies have a fullback named Sam Rogers. He now owns the Miami Hurricanes.

Virginia Tech fullback Sam Rogers is an unassuming young man, probably. He’s mostly just a small cog in the machine of Justin Fuente’s offense. His career totals are meager, and he’s not a huge part of the Hokies’ passing game, obviously.

EXCEPT WHEN HE’S THROWING TOUCHDOWN PASSES TO OTHER FULLBACKS.

In the third quarter of Tech’s game against Miami on Thursday, the Hokies called for what looked like a garden-variety sweep run. It was not, as Rodgers pulled back his right arm and uncorked a gorgeous 13-yard touchdown strike to Steven Peoples. Peoples is also a fullback, rendering this an official fullback-to-fullback touchdown pass. We might never see the likes of this again, and it’s to be appreciated for all time.

It wasn’t the first time Rogers has thrown. He was 2 of 3 for 22 yards over a four-plus-year career entering Thursday. But this was his first touchdown strike, to go with two scored on the ground.

Rogers has made a general habit of dunking all over Miami on this night. In the first half, Rodgers – who is listed at 5’11 and 230 pounds and comes from somewhere called Mechanicsville, Va. – caught a pass in the open field and juked a bunch of Hurricane defenders like it was nothing, rumbling all the way to Miami’s 7-yard line.

Sam Rogers is a college football icon. He is a senior, and that we only have a few games left with him makes me sad.
