This ref missed an Iowa player spearing Wisconsin’s RB right in the face

How you you miss this?

With a referee close by, this hit on Wisconsin running back Corey Clement went unpunished in the first quarter the Badgers’ game against Iowa.

Iowa DB Brandon Snyder levels a huge hit on Clement, the problem is he leads with the crown of his helmet and this probably should have been a flag.

For a refresher, the applicable part of the targeting rule is here:

No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown (top) of his helmet. This foul requires that there be at least one indicator of targeting (See Note 1 below). When in question, it is a foul.

By the letter of the law, even if you think there is a grey area (which in my opinion there isn’t) the officials are instructed to err on the side of throwing the flag.

Clement wasn’t hurt on the play and stayed in the game.

Later in the game, the zebras redeemed themselves. They walked back a targeting call after replay, which in a perfect world, is how things should work. Throw the laundry and let the eye in the sky determine if it was the right call or not.
