Oklahoma beat Texas Tech in a shootout that broke Division I’s all-time yardage record

No. 16 Oklahoma and Texas Tech gave us a good ole fashioned Big 12 shootout on Saturday night in Lubbock, with OU winning a 66-59 thriller that shattered record books, none bigger than the Division I record for yards in a single game. The teams combined to put up 1,708, just six yards shy of the 1,714 yards that stands as the all-time NCAA record (set by Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State in 2012).

Plenty of individuals had standout performances:

This game went completely bonkers in the fourth quarter. To put it into perspective, there was a total of 400 yards of offense and 36 points in the quarter alone.

Both quarterbacks had strong performances. Texas Tech’s Patrick Mahomes had 819 total yards of total offense, good for a single-game FBS record, and seven total touchdowns.

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield was equally impressive, scoring six touchdowns, which tied the single-game OU record. He also had zero turnovers on the night.

The first half went back and forth, and featured 54 points — OU went into the locker room with 30-24 lead, highlighted by a Mayfield touchdown pass to Nick Basquine with 17 seconds remaining in the half.

The third quarter had a similar back-and-forth feel, but the Sooners were able to score three touchdowns, while holding the Red Raiders to two touchdowns gave the Sooners a 51-38 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Joe Mixon, the OU running back, produced 377 yards from scrimmage. Dede Westbrook had nine catches for 202 yards.

Mayfield returned to Lubbock for the first time eligible since transferring away from Texas Tech in 2013. Mayfield went with Oklahoma for the Sooners’ game in 2014, but Mayfield wasn’t eligible just yet.

“Everybody tried to talk about the ‘revenge’ or whatever, but that’s all way in the past,” Mayfield said earlier this week via the Dallas Daily News. “We talked about that last year. It is going to be a little different with the fan base. That’s the first time I’m going back there since playing there. That’ll be the different part. But, for me, it’s no different than playing any other Big 12 team.”

Tech fans weren’t too happy after Mayfield’s OU team came out on top.
