Tennessee won’t win the national championship this year. They won’t win the SEC championship. They won’t win the SEC East championship. They also won’t win the informal state of Tennessee championship, after losing to Vanderbilt on the road, 45-34.
Butch Jones said Tennessee won ‘the championship of life.’ Then UT lost to Vandy
Tough day for the life champs.
But there is one championship Tennessee has already won this season, thankfully.
And in the greatest indecency of the day, the Vols wasted a virtuoso performance by Josh Dobbs. The QB went 31-34 through the air for a 91 percent completion rate.
There’s no telling if the life championship is enough to salvage an 8-4 season that was supposed to be much better. The life title would be the first time the Vols would be No. 1 in the nation in some sort of rankings since the 1998 national championship, but does the loss to Vanderbilt put that in jeopardy? These bros are certainly confused.
For the second time since 1923, Vanderbilt has beaten both Tennessee and Georgia in the same season.
And it’s a huge coup for Derek Mason. Mason entered the season on the embattled side of the coaching hot seat spectrum with a team that really struggled on offense in many games. In the back-half of the schedule, though, Vanderbilt beat Georgia, Ole Miss and now Tennessee. The Commodores are bowl-eligible, and will head to the postseason for the eighth time in school history, and the first time since 2013.
But the Commodores unloaded the clip to the tune of over 600 yards of total offense in the win. Mason’s body language said it all after the huge win.
You could say it was even the biggest win of his life.
