The coaching carousel season is in full swing. On Sunday evening, Football Scoop first reported that San Jose State has parted ways with head coach Ron Caragher after four seasons. Fox Sports confirmed the news on Sunday as well.

Caragher’s overall record in four seasons was 19-30. In his first season as the Spartans’ head coach, the team went 6-6. Following that year, the Spartans had three straight losing seasons, including a 3-9 season in 2014.

In 2015, San Jose had a 5-7 season, but was able to earn a bowl invitation to the AutoNation Cure Bowl, in which the Spartans beat Georgia State, 27-16. This season, Caragher finished with a 4-8 record.

The Mercury News touched on some of the struggles that Caragher’s team dealt with this season.

The Spartans entered the 2016 season with reasons for optimism due to a veteran offensive line and experienced quarterback in Kenny Potter.

But the defense was ineffective against the run – a continuing problem under Caragher – and SJSU found ways to lose. The nadir came in the penultimate game, when clock mismanagement cost the Spartans a potential victory over Air Force.

The news is the second head coaching vacancy we’ve seen on Sunday alone — Nevada announced Sunday afternoon that it is mutually parting ways with head coach Brian Polian.
