Donald Trump at Army-Navy: ‘I don’t know if it’s necessarily the best football’

But it’s “very good” to be there, the president-elect says.

In the renewal of a long-standing tradition, president-elect Donald Trump is at Saturday’s Army-Navy game in Baltimore. Trump joined CBS broadcasters Verne Lundquist and Gary Danielson at halftime and during the third quarter. Trump said something that was, to be frank, quite true.

“I just love the armed forces,” Trump told Lundquist and Danielson. “Love the folks. The spirit is so incredible. I mean, I don’t know if it’s necessarily the best football, but it’s very good. But, boy, do they have a spirit. More than anybody. It’s beautiful.”

Trump said he was “totally neutral” in the game between the Black Knights and the Midshipmen. And he is not incorrect about the quality of play in the game. The first half featured Army taking a 14-0 lead and getting more first downs (14) than Navy had total plays (13), with five turnovers mixed in among 30 minutes of play.

But the pageantry’s cool, and so is the game.

There is, however, one thing about Donald Trump commenting on a specific football game’s quality.
