Appalachian State won the Camellia Bowl on Saturday, which is great. But the Mountaineers, apparently, want more.
Appalachian State just made an alternate reality where it replaced Washington in the Playoff
Shoot your shot, Appalachian State.
Specifically, they want Bama.
App State has constructed an alternate reality here, in which the College Football Playoff’s selection committee bases its decisions on a sample size of exactly 32 games against FBS competition. The Mountaineers are 27-5 in that span, which dates back for the better part of three seasons. Washington, meanwhile, is a mere 20-12.
These are facts only. To point out some other things:
Yes, Washington lost six games in each of the last two years before getting way better, and yes, Washington played a Pac-12 schedule while App State played in the Sun Belt. And yes, 32 games is the most arbitrary of all arbitrary endpoints. And yes, that 32-game period specifically starts with a now-meaningless UW loss at Oregon on Oct. 18, 2014, immediately after a 4-1 stretch against FBS competition.
Yes, if Washington played App State on a neutral field, the Huskies would likely win by several touchdowns. These are also true things.
But there’s no harm in shooting your shot. So to the Sun Belt co-champs and winners of 21 games in the last two seasons, cheers to you for shooting this ultra-specific shot.
