Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee 2016 odds: Vols favorites at Bristol Motor Speedway

The Tennessee Volunteers face the Virginia Tech Hokies as double-digit betting favorites at Bristol Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

Christopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY Sports

The Tennessee Volunteers are 7-0 straight up and 4-3 against the spread over their last seven games. The Volunteers will try to extend that winning streak at Bristol Motor Speedway this Saturday night against the Virginia Tech Hokies.

Tennessee is a 10.5-point betting favorite in this primetime matchup at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com. The line has moved steadily towards Tennessee early in the week after the Volunteers opened as 9-point favorites.

Loaded with talent and coming off a 6-0 SU and 4-2 ATS finish to the 2015 season, the Volunteers entered this season with plenty of hype. But in what was supposed to be a comfortable game at home against Appalachian State as a 21.5-point favorite, Tennessee stalled on offense through most of the day and narrowly escaped with a 20-13 win in overtime.

Backers certainly weren't happy, but the Volunteers did avoid disaster with the outright win and still have a chance to get things on track before conference play begins. In the Volunteers' last 10 games as a double-digit favorite they are 10-0 SU and 6-4 ATS per the OddsShark College Football Database.

Betting Line / Total: Tennessee -10.5 / 52 Points

Trend: The total has gone UNDER in five of Tennessee’s last seven games after a win.

Trend: Virginia Tech is 16-2 SU in its last 18 games in Week 2.

The Justin Fuente era of Virginia Tech football started off with a win last Saturday as the Hokies defeated the Liberty Flames 36-13. Frank Beamer retired last season after an unprecedented 29 seasons at the helm, but the team appears to be left in good hands with the former Memphis Tigers coach.

Virginia Tech has flourished in the underdog role in recent seasons with a 7-5 SU and 8-4 ATS record in its last 12 games as a dog, including a 35-21 road win over Ohio State as a 10-point underdog in 2014.

Saturday’s total is set at 52 points. The OVER is 5-0 in Virginia Tech’s last five games against SEC opponents.

Fuente should keep the Virginia Tech tradition of being a tough special teams and defense team alive, which has always made the Hokies dangerous even when they’ve been outmatched from a talent perspective against their opponent. Tennessee has the skill to win this game comfortably, but will need a quick turnaround from last week’s effort if it hopes to avoid another upset scare.
