The ‘Battle for the Big Ten East’ heats up with this Week 8 matchup.

The Wolverines may only be a one-loss team, but their defense can only keep them in the game for so long before the offense will ultimately need to find success. If Michigan can commit to the running game, it might have a chance to run out the clock and limit the opportunities Penn State’s offense has to put points — so, so many points — on the board.

Michigan vs. Penn State news:
- What’s Michigan’s best chance of winning Saturday? Running the ball. A lot.
- Penn State has finally committed to a right tackle, plus the rest of the depth chart.
- Should the Wolverines be ranked higher than No. 19 after last week’s OT win?
While Michigan’s game wasn’t pretty in victory, they did tally up over 200 yards rushing on the day, and the defense had an impressive goal-line stand. Michigan may be getting penalized too much for their loss against Michigan State.
- A pair of Nittany Lions have been awarded midseason All-American honors.
Barkley has accounted for 649 yards on 102 rushing attempts, while also contributing 395 receiving yards on 29 attempts. He rounds it off by contributing 258 yards on eight returns, taking one of the aforementioned returns for a score.
Haley has been a staple on the secondary, amassing 15 tackles (two for loss), a sack, two interceptions, and a fumble return for a touchdown. Haley received his honors on USA Today and The All-American.
The beginning of the ‘Battle for the Big Ten East’ starts in Week 8.
Penn State has been leading the conference since the start of the 2017 season with running back Saquon Barkley finding success in every phase of the game, and productive performances from quarterback Trace McSorley. Inching its way up the rankings since Week 1, the Nittany Lions -- who kept the No. 4 spot for several weeks -- moved up to No. 2 after a Clemson loss last weekend.
Michigan on the other hand, once held second place in the Big Ten East division, but after a loss to the Spartans in Week 5, fell behind both Michigan State and Ohio State. In the polls, the Wolverines fell another two spots to No. 19 this week with a narrow, overtime win over the Hoosiers.
Both Penn State and Michigan will still face the Buckeyes in the coming weeks, with all three teams hoping to prevent a three-way tie for the top spot in the division.
Michigan vs. Penn State prediction:
The Nittany Lions prove to be too much for Michigan on Saturday, and the Wolverines record their second loss of the season and wave goodbye to their hopes of taking the top spot in the Big Ten — and landing a decent bowl game in the postseason.
