With bowl implications on the line, this Big Ten matchup could be a nail-biter until late in the fourth quarter.

Neither of these teams are in contention for the a top spot among the Big Ten East, but are definitely still fighting for good bowl placement in the postseason. After finishing the 2016 season 3-9, the now 5-1 Spartans are only one win away from bowl eligibility, while the 3-3 Hoosiers will need to kick start an end-of-season push to even make it into the postseason.

Indiana vs. Michigan State news:
- The Spartans jumped another Big Ten team in the rankings to take over the No. 18 spot.
- Indiana still has a hard time coming away with wins in big games.
You know the drill.
Indiana hangs with ranked team. Scares them late but loses close. Game is watched by many. Afterwards, opposing team fans give faint praise such as “Good game! You guys really gave us a scare! Got a lot to build on down in Bloomington!” before ripping their highly-paid coach to shreds for not winning by more against a “basketball school.”
- Former walk-on Kenny Willekes is becoming Michigan State’s defensive MVP.
Six games into the season, he’s been the biggest surprise on this team and his performance on the defensive line – which we all knew would be a question mark this season – is a huge reason the Spartans are 5-1. There’s simply no denying that after a season that saw just 11 sacks.
It could all come down to the fourth quarter on Saturday.
The Spartans appeared to escape their Week 7 matchup against Minnesota with mere minutes to spare, but that doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Michigan State started the game behind by three, but quickly tallied up points and started to run away from the Gophers. That was until it let off the gas by the end of the third quarter, letting Minnesota make a run for the upset. The Spartans were ultimately able to hold out until the final whistle to get the win, but it was a little too close for comfort for fans.
Similarly for Indiana, they had several opportunities last week to hand the Wolverines their second loss of the season. But instead, quarterback Peyton Ramsey made a couple poor zone reads, and the Hoosiers were on the wrong side of some questionable calls by the officials — essentially negating a successful onside kick. The Hoosiers aren’t going to be able to make a late-game attempt for a win each week and will need to start finding earlier success if they want to pull off these conference upsets.
Indiana vs. Michigan State prediction:
The Hoosiers just have a way of ruining conference opponents’ days. Indiana is probably the ultimate trap game for a handful of teams — year after year — and this week is no different. After barely losing to Michigan last week, it won’t make the same mistake against the Spartans and secure the win late in the game.
