The Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-3) and the Iowa Hawkeyes (4-3) have a rich rivalry that dates back to 1891, and both teams will continue their annual head-to-head matchup on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. ET. Fox Sports 1 (livestream) will broadcast this game.

Since 1935, Minnesota and Iowa have collided annually to see who would walk away with the Floyd of Rosedale trophy — a bronze trophy that’s shaped like a pig. The winner can keep the trophy until next year’s contest. This season, the Golden Gophers want to take home this trophy, especially since they haven’t won this matchup since 2014. The Golden Gophers also haven’t won in Kinnick Stadium since 1999.

That streak could continue this weekend if the Hawkeyes’ rushing attack shows up. Iowa is 3-0 this season when running back Akrum Wadley eclipses 100 yards rushing. But the Hawkeyes are 1-3 when Wadley doesn’t explode for 100 yards or more. Wadley ran for only 90 yards on 26 carries in Iowa’s loss last week to Northwestern.

Offensively, Minnesota has to keep running the ball well. It is coming off the heels of a 333-yard rushing performance against Illinois.

Minnesota vs. Iowa News

Before the bronze statue, there was the real life Floyd, before the real pig there was this wooden pig sign. Today it sits on display in an Edina sunporch. This is the little known story about oldest, shortest lived, and only pig trophy to never change hands in the Iowa - Minnesota rivalry.

I was 14-years-old when I first heard the term, “Goofer.”

I was sitting in the stands with my father at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2005. It was at least an hour before the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Minnesota Golden Gophers, led by then head coach Glen Mason, would take the field for the kickoff.

I had never seen the Gophers play in person before. These were the nascent years of my fandom, and I was excited to see my team in action for the first time. As soon as we took our seats, it didn’t take long before a couple fans sitting nearby took notice of my Gopher gear and began offering some family-friendly trash talk directed at the “Goofers.”

Topics include: Is the offense THAT bad? Why does Kirk Ferentz stink with more time to prep? What’s up with the offensive play calling? Is the offensive line to blame for a majority of these problems? Can Kirk Ferentz let a guy live? Is it time to start getting the younger players some more time to shine on film? And can Nate Stanley throw anything besides a fast ball?

Minnesota vs. Iowa prediction

Minnesota will find a way to reclaim the Floyd of Rosedale trophy. The Golden Gophers defense should come into this game focusing on the run. Indeed, this will be an upset.
