It’s officially halftime of Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma, and the Sooners currently lead the Red Raiders 28-20. Yep, 48 combined points is a lot for a first half, but it’s pretty expected for these two high-flying offenses. There are some eye-opening offensive numbers from this first half alone, so let’s break em down for you:
Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma update: On pace for almost 1,200 yards, as God intended
Love you, shootouts.

- Both teams have combined for 599 total yards of offense already.
- OU quarterback Baker Mayfield has thrown for 144 yards and two touchdowns.
- Texas Tech quarterback Nic Shimonek has thrown three touchdowns.
- One of those touchdowns was a 70-yard throw, another went 42 yards.
- Texas Tech has two receivers averaging more than 20 yards per reception.
- Oklahoma’s averaging nine yards per carry on the ground.
This isn’t all too surprising coming from these two teams. Last season when they met, it was a shootout that broke numerous records:
With OU winning a 66-59 thriller that shattered record books, none bigger than the Division I record for yards in a single game. The teams combined to put up 1,708, just six yards shy of the 1,714 yards that stands as the all-time NCAA record (set by Hardin-Simmons and Sul Ross State in 2012).
Plenty of individuals had standout performances:
Oh, and there were a total of 400 yards of offense and 36 points in the fourth quarter of that game, and Texas Tech QB Pat Mahomes had 819 total yards of total offense, a single-game FBS record, and seven total touchdowns.
One of the game’s highlights happened before the thing even kicked off — Mayfield, a former Texas Tech QB, came off the team bus wearing an anti-himself T-shirt:
We’ll see what both these offenses do in the second half — I think it’s pretty safe to assume there will be a lot of points!
