Texas beat Kansas State in double-overtime on Saturday in Austin, 40-34. K-State kicker Matthew McCrane put a 53-yard field goal off the left upright in that second OT period, and Chris Warren III scored on the ensuing possession to win it.

Texas safety Deshon Elliott intercepted a Jesse Ertz pass with 32-seconds left in regulation, giving the Longhorns the ball in a tie game at their own 33. Sam Ehlinger swiftly guided the Texas offense to the Kansas State 28-yard line, setting up a game-winning field goal opportunity. Joshua Rowland missed a 46-yarder by just a whisker, sending the game to overtime. Rowland had previously missed a 27-yard try, though he’d also made two kicks to help UT stay in the game.
The teams then traded touchdowns in the first overtime.
Texas trailed 17-7 in the second quarter and needed to claw back to have a chance at the end. The Longhorns were playing without usual starting quarterback Shane Buechele, who missed his third game of the season with a shoulder ailment. His replacement was true freshman Ehlinger, who’s shown a lot of moxie in limited action but is far from a finished product. Ehlinger wasn’t excellent, but he helped UT push the ball downfield enough to stay in the game. He was useful in the running game, too, on scrambles, options, and designed quarterback keepers.
Kansas State entered at 3-1 to the Longhorns’ 2-2. Their sole loss was to Vanderbilt, which stifled it in a 14-7 final in Week 3. Bill Snyder’s team rebounded to beat Baylor by two scores in its Big 12 opener, and it hung in evenly against a more talented (though probably not better) Texas team that had a home-field advantage. The Wildcats look rock-solid, just like they always do. They just couldn’t finish here.
