Early in in Auburn’s 40-17 win over Georgia in November, I thought the Tigers were in trouble. They were kicking field goals in situations where a touchdown was necessary. The conventional wisdom being that you’d better score seven at every opportunity Georgia’s vaunted defense would allow.
Kirby Smart acknowledged Gus Malzahn’s ‘We whipped the dog crap out of ‘em’ comment, then won the UGA-Auburn rematch
A role reversal.

It didn’t matter, because in the end, it was the Dawgs’ inefficiency on offense that precluded them from scoring. When it was over, Malzahn asked the obvious, in rhetorical fashion.
1. “We whipped the dog crap out of them, didn’t we?”
They certainly did — and the numbers are eye-popping — particularly by executing a blueprint that no one else had prior.
The Dawgs were three-of-14 third downs, with an average distance of eight yards to gain. Nine third down situations were nine-plus yards, and only three were with four yards to gain or fewer.
Fromm was four-of-11 passing on third-down attempts, converting three third downs through the air. A penalty gave the Dawgs the other conversion.
UGA rushed on one third down to no avail (losing one yard), and got sacked on two others.
2. The next Monday, Smart was asked about Malzahn’s comments:
“When you play liked they did, you earned the right to say things like that,” he said via WSB’s Zach Klein.
The Tigers stymied the Dawgs all afternoon, and, well, they whipped the dog crap out of them.
3. Then the teams played again.
And Georgia won in the SEC Championship game, 28-7. It was total domination.
