Can a rising star quarterback lead a mini-revival for the Aggies — and save his coach’s job?

The Ole Miss Rebels will be looking for a new head coach this offseason. If the Rebels win on Saturday, the Texas A&M Aggies could be as well. The two teams meet at 7 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 (live stream).

Kevin Sumlin’s perpetually warm seat could heat to untenable temperatures if the inconsistent Aggies coach finds a way to lose to one of the SEC West’s worst teams. A&M needs a win in the season’s penultimate week to ensure a winning record and provide a modicum of job security for Sumlin. The Rebels, one win from bowl eligibility, will be playing for their postseason lives with an Egg Bowl showdown against a top 25 Mississippi State team looming.

Texas A&M at Ole Miss news:

  • Former Ole Miss coach Tommy Tuberville will be calling Saturday’s game on ESPN2. That should be fine!

With the end of the A&M football season looming, it’s fair to say that our coaching situation is looking murky at best. The loss to UCLA combined with two blowout SEC West losses against Miss. State and Auburn probably means that we’re going to be in the market for a new coach. Then again, it’s possible (maybe not likely) that A&M goes on a tear to finish the season and ends up with nine wins, marking its best season since 2013.

The numbers speak for themselves when looking at how Ole Miss jumped out to 28-0 lead. Ta’amu blew the game wide open by connecting on his first nine passes for 152 yards, and he didn’t throw an incomplete pass until they were up 21-0. The defense does deserve credit for allowing that lead to grow, forcing ULL to punt three consecutive times and start leaning on their less reliable passing attack.

3. Here are some fun numbers:

THREE: Aggie receivers broke 100 receiving yards. That hasn’t happened in [is too lazy to research answer] a long time, probably. Roshauud Paul and Jhamon Ausbon joined Kirk in the hundred club. Six different wide receivers also had receptions for 11+ yards.

FOUR: TD passes by Starkel.

Will last week’s offensive revival mean anything for Texas A&M?

The Aggies rolled up 55 points and 562 total yards last week — but that was against a 3-7 New Mexico team. Nick Starkel took the bulk of the team’s snaps behind center in place of Kellen Mond and impressed, throwing for 400-plus yards and four touchdowns — but again, that was against the Lobos. If he can even come close to those numbers Saturday night, Texas A&M may have found a building block at quarterback. If Starkel is for real, it could even be the key to saving Sumlin’s job.

Texas A&M vs. Ole Miss prediction:

One thing A&M has done well this season is take care of underwhelming conference competition — be it Florida, Arkansas, or an actually pretty good South Carolina team. The Aggies will get the win over a less-than-enthusiastic Ole Miss team in Oxford.
